I guess I’m building up the short-ish ones before I get to An American Tragedy or The Magus or Savage Detectives or the rest of Gore Vidal’s Lincoln…

You must let me know what you think of this book. It has been on my TBR for awhile. It has always been near the top but other books seem to always come ahead of it.

James | 20 comments I liked it a lot more than I thought I would. The meta elements don't come across as cheap or a cop-out, but rather an honest attempt on his part to contextualize and understand his perception of the war decades after the fact. In that sense, it's occasionally much more about the act of writing about the war than the war itself, but then he'll get into full fiction mode and it'll still be beautifully written and evocative without becoming hyperbolic (unlike me right now, ha).

If you like military history you might like Flyboys: A True Story of Courage by James Bradley. However, this is a non-fiction book. The writing is not cleverly put to bring you in. It is written to tell the tale and the words of the people.

James | 20 comments Phrases like "A True Story of Courage" are usually warning signs for me, but I'll definitely look into it, thanks for the recommendation.

01/14/10: Motherless Brooklyn by Jonathan Lethem
Doubleday 1999 edition, 311 pages

Total so far: 1041 pages

Figure I'll do a count every five books or thousand pages or something...

Yes, that can put someone off. I felt like this book was well researched. I was greatful that it also carried words and stories from both sides of the war. It laid out the history and societies expectations. The book drew me in and left me awed about some pieces I didn't know about. (being that I'm a history major.) in the end Flyboys didn't take sides but gave you information to digest.

James | 20 comments On the WW2 note, I'm really looking forward to checking out Studs Terkel's The Good War; seems pretty righteous...

Yes, I heard of that one. Lots of good things. I just haven't had much time so I haven't tried to round it up.
