The broad arc that built this story is incredible and unimaginable -- and yet, I wasn't drawn in as I'd hoped and expected to be. The story was told through a journalist's lens: the eye for detail in conversation and description, which made me turn pages. But, for me, the writing lacked a deeper intimacy. I kept wondering why she wrote this story, which lacked a Magical Thinking quality of dealing with death of loved ones. I kept wondering if she felt pressured to write it because of the "story", but held back from peeling back more layers of herself.(less)

Shame on me for expecting a "good" read based on this book's overwhelming success. MY inner goddess yelled at Anastasia throughout the whole until she walked out on Grey on the final page. My inner goddess knows she'll be back for more punishment since there are 2 more books in the series, fortunately we won't be along to find out how they go. Let me guess: the boss at the new job also has a dark secret!
Anastasia is a lamely written character, and I even found myself rolling my own eyes during the most believable scenes, where she struggled to deal with her feelings with the relationship. I'm having a hard time buying that the girl who does not wear dresses and has never even WANTED more than a kiss from a man before this encounter would put up with a guy like this.
Eye-roll meter: 1) Google. Girlfriend only googled photos for him? I'd be googling the shit out of my 1st boyfriend, especially one like this. 2) the author's British-isms ran rampant. When's the last time you heard 20-something's say "For pity's sake?" 3) thank you, author, for reminding me of Christian Grey's LONG fingers so often. 4) I actually burst out laughing every time the laptop appeared because I knew it would be described as the "mean machine." AHHGHGHGGHGH
I could add to this list all day, but, alas. In the interest of saying something positive: the helicopter ride to Seattle was a great touch. Who wouldn't like that?
This is so so so bad. My condolences to all the romance writers out there who work hard to create rich characters and plots. This isn't helping the genre.(less)

This story is so cheesy. Granted, I'm not a fan of reality-bending worlds (prefer a 100% commitment if you're going there at all), and wasn't interested in reading the book, but the pickings were slim during my latest library trip. Fun fact: I didn't even know which heartthrob from the movies was Edward/Jacob and pictured Kristin Stewart in love with the dark brooding one, not the greasy one, until I finally Wikipedia'd something about the plot.
NO point in a lengthy review picking apart the plot, because it was exactly as cheesy as I expected, and Bella annoyed me. The final disc in the set actually was pretty scratched up, so I missed some bits and piece of the epilogue... but I didn't really even care. Please don't send any vampires after me.
Al-so. The nar-rator in this audiobook version didn't help things by over-pro-nouncing every syl-lable, especially Bel-la, every. single. time. Gah.(less)

I love plots that intertwine characters' lives, so this one had all the set-up for success. While I was definitely drawn in by the writing, and have many pages with underlined passages of beautiful phrases, I didn't feel terribly compelled by any of the characters. The artist/hippie couple were complete throwaways for me, and by the end of the story "book 4" I couldn't figure out at all why she was given a point of view.
And speaking of point of view -- why were some characters' stories written in 3rd person, but some in 1st? I went back through the book and tried to figure out a pattern or rationale, but to no avail. Any ideas?
I still gave it 3 stars b/c I liked weaving together the diverse characters, and linking them with an event that really happened. Also, NYC.(less)

Confession: when I pulled up to red lights I turned the volume down or rolled up the windows. GWB says he started writing this book the day after he left the White House & it's pretty clear he'd LOVE a Truman-like swing in his legacy. I don't see how he thought this book would help. Glad I read it though, & def recommend for history buffs(less)
