Had many of the postcards but there were an equal number of photo postcards which are most rare because most of them were not mass produced. A photographer would have a donkey or oxen, the person(s) would sit on the animal, picture was taken, then given to the person later (don't know how long) and they could mail them. I have some of those but just a handfull.

Like most of America, St. Augustine, too, was roaring mostly with development.

As the oldest city in the nation, when the postcard craze developed at the turn of the century, visitors (as they're called, not so much tourists) mailed them all over the world.

There is an ongoing dispute as to whether slaves were ever sold since there are a number of postcards which states "slave market." I was glad that Beth mentioned that it is still debated whether Spanish St. Augustine bought or sold slaves.

There were a number of postcards of homes or building which were "demolished" or "razed" in the 1960's and 1970's prior to the city passing a demolition ordinance. In my opinion, the ordinance should have been passed much sooner than it was (within the past 10 years or so.) But Beth stayed away from editorializing, although it would be easy to do.

Great book for deltiologists (like myself) or just those interested in U. S. history since St. Augustine is the oldest permanent settlement in the U. S. Sorry, no it's not Jamestown.(less) "
